Betty North poses for a photo with her story board and her instructor, Jan Britt. Each student in the class creates a story board featuring one room in their home.
Student from Bahamas flies in for interior decorating class

KENNESAW, Ga. (January 21, 2014) – Instructor Jan Britt knew she had a world-class program, but she didn’t know her Interior Decorating for the Homeowner class would prompt one prospective student to fly in from another country – just to take the course.

Betty North, who hails from the Bahamas, found out about the program from her sister who lives in Kennesaw. She looked at similar courses in Florida – closer to home, she said – but decided that the College of Continuing and Professional Education offered the best option for her career goals.

“It was worth the trip,” North said. “I obtained a wealth of knowledge in the art of interior decorating attending this course.  It was a pleasure studying with Jan Britt.”

Britt said all her students are special, but she felt honored to know one made an international flight just for the opportunity to sit in her class. For her, it’s a first in 17 years of teaching.

The five-week class focuses on decorating the home, including colors, fabrics, furniture arrangement, flooring, photos and more. Students are given step-by-step guidelines to complete the process, from identifying their own decorating style to receiving an interior design consultation on one of the rooms in their home.

The next class begins Feb. 6 at KSU Center. It’s held in the evenings, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., every Thursday through March 6.

New certificate program keeps students on ‘cutting edge’ in tech industry

Class provides exam prep, learning foundation, not ‘boot camp’

KENNESAW, Ga. (February 6, 2014) – Information security is one of the most in-demand jobs in today’s tech world, according to research by TechRepublic.

IT professionals looking to transition to this field or take the next step in their career have a resource in the new Information Systems Security Professional Certificate program.

“They asked; we listened,” said Kristy Mobley, Technology program manager. “We’re always looking to stay on the cutting edge, especially in this industry, which is constantly changing. Last year, we had several requests from students to add an Information Systems Security course, and now our first class is set to start Feb. 17.”

Learn more
The 13-week course is comprehensive, teaching the essentials of Information Systems Security. Graduates earn a professional certificate to help them gain a competitive edge in this booming career field.

The course also prepares students for the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP®) exam, once all other exam qualifications are met. The course material thoroughly covers the CISSP® Common Body of Knowledge, recognized worldwide as a standard for information security practitioners.

That’s what the course is. But there’s also something it is not.

“It’s not boot camp,” Mobley said. “Some courses are designed simply to make you pass an exam — in this case, the CISSP® — cramming lots of information into a few days, but that’s not what we do here. In 26 sessions, our instructor goes over the material, prepping you not just for the exam but also giving you a foundation in the science behind protecting information systems. We want our graduates to be equipped not just to pass a test but to excel in their chosen field.”

Meet the instructor
Course instructor Larry Holt brings with him more than 20 years of experience in information systems.

Holt is a retired Major for U.S. Army Intelligence who holds CISSP® and CCSE Plus certifications as well as a Master of Information Systems from Kennesaw State University. A former Information Systems Security instructor in an NSA accredited baccalaureate program, Holt is also the author of two published, peer-reviewed academic papers on information security.

The class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6 to 9 p.m., starting Feb. 17. Visit the website for details, including prerequisites and a syllabus, or call 770-423-6765.

Conquer your fears

Lynn Mock, second from left, poses with graduates who have earned the OLLI Scholar Computer certificate.

Pioneer instructor boasts 200+ graduates

For many of us, fear of the unknown can be paralyzing. Longtime Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) instructor Lynne Mock said that fear of technology and using new equipment is the preeminent challenge of her students aged 50 and older.

Serving OLLI since 2000, Mock is dedicated to reassuring her pupils of everything they are capable of and helping them conquer their fears, particularly when it comes to computers.

“I take what they already know and demonstrate to them that it’s not much different from the knowledge they already have,” Mock explained. “I show them it isn’t magic, bells and whistles, but just another step in their lives.”

Mock leads a wide variety of computer courses, implementing the KISS (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) method. She says her goal is to present the curriculum in a basic format that makes learning fun and non-threatening.

“I always tell my students, ‘I don’t know of a single car that cranked itself up and went out and caused a wreck.’ Knowing how to use the computer properly can make the difference in keeping you safe on the Internet and on the computer,” Mock said.

Recognizing her student’s lack of familiarity with computers and technology, Mock spearheaded the OLLI Scholar Certificate. She designed the program to consist of five foundational courses with the goal of becoming more computer proficient. Students completing all five courses within one year are awarded a certificate and crowned an OLLI Scholar. To date, OLLI has seen more than 200 graduates of this program.

“She’s very patient with her students and has helped pave the way for many of them to re-enter the workforce,” said Michelle Girage, program director. “Additionally, she has alleviated students’ apprehension of social media allowing them to become more connected with family and friends.”

Instructor Ted Sanders shares insight on retirement plans and strategies with OLLI students during a Solving the Retirement Puzzle class at the College of Continuing and Professional Education.

OLLI helps you put all the pieces together

Individuals age 50 and older account for an increasing percentage of the U.S. population. Projections show that the older population will more than double by 2050. Time is money, and now is the time to start preparing so you can enjoy a long and meaningful retirement.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is here to help you navigate through our complex world with courses created to assist in the fundamentals of surviving financially. Our Solving the Retirement Puzzle class will provide you valuable information about IRAs, basic strategies for effective investing, RMDs, annuities and managing risk.

With more than 30 years of experience, instructor Ted Sanders has been providing financial wisdom to OLLI students to help them expect the unexpected.

"People have a tendency to react to events and base decisions on how bad or good things are,” Sanders explained. “They procrastinate when making important financial decisions. What they don’t realize is that once the event happens, it’s too late. Older adults should start to think long term and plan ahead.”

The course will also explore how to avoid common and costly mistakes made before and during retirement. The next class is being offered on Wednesday, March 12, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at KSU Center. Students are encouraged to bring their spouse or sibling at no additional cost.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is excited to provide several different eBay classes to assist you. James Daniel, OLLI eBay instructor, said he started selling on eBay as a method to help his wife get rid of the items she had accumulated due to her “passion for shopping.”

Daniel further explained, “After beginning to sell on eBay, it quickly became a huge success and started to demand more of my time. At that point, we decided to sell on eBay full time.”

Boasting more than 300 million members, eBay’s user-friendly service allows you to sell as a hobby with the potential of growing it into a lucrative business.

“People wanting to get rid of items around the house, retirees looking for a second career, small business owners searching for new marketing venues, entrepreneurs wanting to start a new business, and anyone seeking an additional source of income would benefit from selling on eBay,” Daniel said.

Upcoming OLLI eBay courses:

Fitness made easy with OLLI

Health is the No. 1 thing many people take for granted. Being healthy and physically fit is something anyone can do at any age. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is pleased to offer courses that boost your stamina and muscle tone without the risks of high impact exercise.

Bringing more than 10 years of fitness experience, Emily Berreth serves as OLLI’s instructor for Gentle Yoga and Pilates Basics courses. According to Berreth, there are numerous benefits to taking the two classes, including improved sleep, finding and developing unused muscles and improved core strength.

The Gentle Yoga curriculum focuses more on utilizing the familiar postures to increase fitness and not the spiritual side of the discipline. Yoga has many benefits to seniors including finding inner peace. Stretching and breathing techniques also are taught allowing students to find a sense of serenity in every environment.

Pilates Basics spotlights the routines that help build flexibility and long, lean muscles. Developing a strong core or center is essential to the exercises that ultimately improve a student’s coordination and balance. The Pilates method gets your mind in tune with your body and is used by professional athletes as well as seniors and children.

“Pilates allows you to learn about yourself and the way your body is capable of moving. It is so much fun to watch students as they discover things about themselves,” Berreth explained.
