Soldier wins iPad mini after attending military job fair

The College of Continuing and Professional Education is honored to serve those who have served us, and it’s always special to find out that the winner of one of our giveaways is an active-duty soldier.

Spc. Nicholas Lovejoy, a medic stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., attended a job fair hosted by RecruitMilitary at the Georgia Dome last month. The soldier is planning to move to the Atlanta area and stopped by the College’s table to find out more about available healthcare programs. Lovejoy said he hopes to pursue a career in medicine.

One of more than 100 entrants in the prize drawing for a free iPad mini, Lovejoy was randomly selected as the winner. He stopped by KSU Center July 3 to pick up his prize.

“It’s especially fitting that we were able to give this prize to a member of the military around the time of our nation’s Independence Day, a great reminder of to whom we owe our freedom,” said Nora Felde, military liaison for CCPE.

The College is proud to provide Military Education (VA, GI Bill) Benefits on select courses, filling a unique position to aid those returning to the workforce.

“Veterans can take advantage of our program to polish any training skills they may be lacking upon returning home to their families and re-entering the work field,” Felde said. “We offer several certificate courses that ease the progression back into the workplace.”

Active duty or honorably discharged members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and National Guard may qualify for benefits that would provide funding for nearly 30 professional certificate programs. Relevant courses include Culinary, Web Design, Project Management, Meeting & Event Management, Real Estate Property Management, Social Media Marketing and Paralegal among others.

“I love to cook and I wanted to learn the fundamentals of it,” said Robert Lewis, Air Force Veteran (2006-09). “Enrollment in the Culinary Apprenticeship Certificate program would have been impossible without military funding.”

Additionally, the Department of Defense offers up to $4,000 to military spouses of active duty and activated National Guard and Reserve Service members who want to pursue continuing education.

"After serving the military community as an event and conference planner during my husband's career, I felt KSU's Meeting & Event Management program would benefit me in starting my own business,” said Pat Davis, 2012 graduate, using MyCAA Benefits. “Having military benefits was a major influence in taking the course as I used the GI Bill units shared by my husband. The quality and excellence of the program exceeded my expectations. As a result, I joined the GA chapter of MPI (Meeting Professional International) and also started my own conference and meeting business."
